Festivals have become a huge part of the year-round entertainment schedule at Epcot. In the past, these festivals have largely been based around the fall (Food and Wine Festival) and spring (Flower and Garden Festival) seasons. This year, Disney is taking it a step farther and adding an entirely new event, The Epcot International Festival of the Arts. While very few details of the event were released, we do have a few ideas about what to expect.

As there always seems to be with these events, food and entertainment will be involved. While the new event is not slated to be as grand as Food and Wine or even Flower and Garden, it will feature six weekends of fun! Each weekend between January 13 and February 20th displays will be featured showcasing artwork from such iconic Disney artists as Mary Blair and Herb Ryman, but the entertainment doesn’t stop there. As a partnership with Disney theatre, theatrical productions will debut at America Gardens Theatre as well throughout the festival.

Beyond the entertainment, food stands, called “studios”, will be present for the event. Each stand will feature artistic and expressive designs through culinary treats for guests to purchase. While this should be an interesting event, the Festival will only be available on weekends (Friday through Monday) for 6 weeks. according to Disney, the entertainment will be different each and every week to give guests even more to experience.

While at this point Disney has given a pretty vague description of the event, it seems to be something new to look forward to. Let us know what you think down below!

Tonight, Disney debuted their first performance of the new aerial drone (nearly 300 drones according to speculation) show and it did not disappoint! While I have yet to see the show in person it is captivating on film as the first videos of the event are slowly trickling out. After watching a livestream earlier tonight, the crowds that witnessed the event certainly approved of the new experience. See it yourself in the video above: (video: thedisneyblog.com)

The experience debuted around 6:45 tonight and Disney has yet to confirm if that will be the continuing time as the show remains at Disney Springs throughout the holiday season. Be sure to check times guides for specific show times. The experience is supposed to be running nightly at Disney Springs and is completely free of charge

Bob Iger Reveals New Disney Resorts Are Coming in the Not So Distant Future

Bob Iger Reveals New Disney Resorts Are Coming in the Not So Distant Future

Last night was Disney’s official Quarterly Earnings Report release. However, very few anticipated what Bob Iger would mention in that release. To the surprise of many shareholders, Iger confirmed that new resorts will be built in the next few years at both Disney World and Disneyland. While the plans for a new resort in California was expected, we had no previous confirmation that new resort(s) would be coming to Disney World in Florida.

While Iger did not elaborate on the additions, his statement could possibly confirm many of the rumors floating around the internet. Speculation has arisen that a new DVC wing will be built at the Contemporary after the convention center is removed (also speculation), a DVC expansion at the Caribbean Beach Resort has also been rumored for quite some time, and the most unlikely rumor that has been around for years is that DVC will arrive at Fort Wilderness at some point. While none of these have been confirmed, height test balloons have already been spotted at Caribbean Beach, an expansion of other resort convention centers point to the Contemporary rumor, and plans for a Fort Wilderness DVC resort have been floating around the internet for quite some time.

As mentioned, all of this is speculation at the time being, but look out for more information coming quite soon considering now we know that the resort(s) are in fact arriving on both coasts. We will update you when more details are available. While not likely, we may have some more info as soon as the Destination D event November 19-20 (also the rumored release for Rivers of Light and potentially more Pandora information). Mickey’s Very Merry Christmas Party is Getting More Complimentary Snacks This Year!

Mickey’s Very Merry Christmas Party is Getting More Complimentary Snacks This Year!

With the Christmas Season in full swing at the Walt Disney World Resort, it’s a bit surprising that Disney released some interesting changes to the Very Merry Christmas Parties this close to the first event. However, they do seem to be changes for the better. The Disney Parks Blog has officially announced a few changes to the event that somehow escaped the Disney Parks online “rumor mill.” (photo: onthegoinmco.com)

For this years events, new snacks will be added that will be complimentary just as the cookies and hot cocoa were in past years. Here’s how they officially worded the changes and additions:

“Joining the hot chocolate and snickerdoodle cookies guests have enjoyed in years past, new complimentary treats are available this year.
  • Hot Chocolate and Snickerdoodle cookie, Tortuga Tavern, Adventureland
  • Eggnog and Gingersnap Molasses Cookie, Heritage House in Liberty Square
  • Snow Cone and Snowman Sugar Cookie, Friar’s Nook in Fantasyland
  • Spiced Apple Cider and Snowman Sugar Cookie, Pete’s Silly Sideshow Storybook Circus in Fantasyland
  • Hot Chocolate and Peppermint Bark Cookie, The Lunching Pad in Tomorrowland
Mickey’s Very Merry Christmas Party takes place select dates in November and December at Magic Kingdom Park, and requires separate admission ticket.”
Considering each of these sound pretty tasty, I’m all for it! While the Snow Cone definitely seems a little out of place, molasses cookies and apple cider both sound like wonderful additions.
We will be attending one of the parties this year, so we’ll be sure to let you know what we think of the new additions! Look forward to that report in mid-December.
The special maps designed specifically for the event also released today so if you’re attending an event be sure to check them out below!

A Drone Light Show Is Arriving At Disney Springs for the Holiday Season!

A Drone Light Show Is Arriving At Disney Springs for the Holiday Season!

This morning we have an incredibly interesting news story that is slowly developing. Disney released early today a teaser for an upcoming holiday light show utilizing a vast number of flying drones! Yes, you read that right! After the FAA approved the use of Drone flight just last week, Disney wasted no time debuting plans for a show that must have been months in the making!

(photo: disneytouristblog.com)

Many speculated that they had such a show in mind, but very few anticipated a full scale spectacle to arrive so soon and at Disney Springs of all places! The released video is quite short but incredibly mesmerizing. You see a controller, a series of drones take flight in an indescribable hum, and a series of lights create what appears to be a Christmas tree in the sky.

The experience is rumored to debut as a part of this years grand plan of activities for Disney Springs this holiday season. This particular show could even debut as soon as mid-November. While all dates are simply speculation, this should be an incredible event to experience!

How to Secure Last Minute Dining Reservations at Walt Disney World

How to Secure Last Minute Dining Reservations at Walt Disney World

Recently we decided to take a semi-last minute vacation to Walt Disney World. While we did book our stay about a month and a half in advance, many of you may realize how difficult it can be to book dining reservations that late in the planning timeframe. Fortunately, we have a lot of experience in the planning process so we managed to secure about every reservation we would typically add to our time in the parks. So, based on our experience we decided to share some of our tips and tricks to booking dining reservation for stays within a short timeframe. (photo: flickr.com)
We do have to mention that many locations are simply unattainable when not booked far in advance. A few examples would be Cinderella’s Royal Table, Be Our Guest, and Victoria and Alberts (occasionally). However, you may get lucky using these tips and stumble into a reservation.
1. Try Booking at Certain Times

-As general as that sounds, booking at certain times of day drastically increases your chance of securing reservations. While Disney does not particularly advertise this, we were informed in a phone dining reservation conversation that there is a window early in the morning between 6am and 7am when a variety of reservations open up. According to the representative we were planning with, phone reservations begin at 7am, but there is a turnover time between 6am and 7am when the dining reservation site updates and prepares for the next day. Certain reservations are dumped from the previous day and more are made available as a result. Due to the fact that the phone reservation group is not open at this time, it allow reservations to be slightly more available. We tried it ourselves and sure enough we secured two of our prime reservations that we could not previously attain. (photo: disneyworld.disney.go.com)
2. Book Over the Phone When Possible

-While this tip is a little contradictory to the last one, which would require you to book online, it often pays off to call rather than use the online system. We found out first hand that quite a few reservations are available when you call that do not always appear on the dining section of Disney’s website. It is not always a wining strategy, but it can never hurt to try, especially if you are only looking for a different time for a reservation which is available at a un-ideal time.
3. Search for Specific Times Online Rather Than Just Choosing Breakfast, Lunch or Dinner

-If you’ve utilized the online booking system before you are probably aware that when searching for dining times you are able choose by what meal you would like to eat. However, if the meal you are looking for does not show up at first, try to search for specific times, also available in the same category. For example, if you’re not picky about meal times, instead of choosing dinner, choose an odd time in the drop down menu (such as 3:00) and a time may appear as a result of the odd in between time that does not always register as lunch or dinner.
So, as you can see there are quite a few simple ways to increase your chances of booking some of the harder to find reservations, no matter how late in the game you are planning your vacation. Also, as a quick tip, you can attempt to go to a few restaurants early in the morning and ask what the best time to attempt a walk up reservation would be. At the Crystal Palace at Magic Kingdom, we have been incredibly successful walking up and getting in for a meal at lunchtime. It is not a foolproof plan, but if you’re willing to risk it it’s always an option (many restaurants will simply tell you they do no take walkups, but that is not necessarily always the case). (photo: disneyworld.disney.go.com)
Hopefully these ideas help you out in the planning process. Of course, our results may vary from what you will be able to find and reserve. Let us know if any of these tips help you make dining reservations you’ve been trying to attain!

Disney Redesigns Times Guides at Magic Kingdom… More Parks to Come?

Disney Redesigns Times Guides at Magic Kingdom… More Parks to Come?

by: guide4wdw – Collin

If you’ve ever been to a Disney park than you have inevitably picked up a times guide for that particular visit. For years, these guides were a simple document with times for certain events and shows throughout the day. The times fluctuate on a weekly basis and the pamphlets make touring the parks much simpler and more enjoyable. However, recently those pamphlets were redesigned, and it appears that the redesign is for the better.

The new guides are fold out pamphlets with lists similar to what was available in the past. The big difference is that the guide is now much easier to understand for first time guests and many returning guests. The redesign features larger text, a breakdown of times for particular events throughout the day by land, and a more detailed and colorful appearance. For many, the change over to listing events by the land in which they take place should make finding particular experiences quite a bit easier. Because, as many of us know all too well, every minute counts when you’re enjoying the happiest place on earth!

While this is not a big change, it should make things easier for a variety of guests in the future. We have yet to confirm if the new time guides will show up in other parks as well, but I would imagine they will roll out soon as long as the changes are received well at Magic Kingdom.

Curious what they look like? Here you go!

What Would Walt Disney Think of Today’s Parks?

What Would Walt Disney Think of Today’s Parks?
by: guide4wdw – Collin
twitter: @guide4disney
instagram: @guide4disney

Walt Disney was a visionary unlike any other. His ideas were boundless and his dedication to a brand that began with a simple drawing of a mouse is nothing short of extraordinary. However, it’s interesting to think, “What would Walt Disney think about today’s parks?” I can only imagine that there would be a variety of emotions, especially considering the man Walt Disney was. He was a businessman, an artist, and an innovator, but at the same time he supposedly knew what he liked and how he wanted it accomplished. Today, the Disney company has picked up a few trends that he may not have agreed with, but others I truly believe he would have found impressive and quite possibly extraordinary.
In Regards to the Money

Throughout the creation of Disneyland and the beginnings of Walt Disney World (essentially acquiring land) Walt Disney never seemed focused on the money. Walt was always chasing the memories and experiences his creations developed rather than what they were going to cost or how they were going to be produced. So, in regards to today, it’s hard to imagine Walt being proud of the company’s inherent desire to please shareholders and post record profits above all else. While in today’s business world, shareholders are king and profits mandate every aspect of a company, it’s hard to imagine Walt would appreciate that mindset.

Walt Disney faced budget problems for years, but for some reason he never seemed to let that influence his innovative decisions. It was as if he knew that if the creations of the company were so extraordinary that everyone had to see them, the money would follow the ideas. Today, I can’t remember the last time Disney tried something simply to innovate rather than to turn a profit. Of course profits are always a goal in any business, but it seems as if something was lost when the creative spirit and risk taking of the man who started it all was no longer in the picture. An Appreciation of, but a Disappointment in What EPCOT Became

It’s hard to think about Walt Disney without contemplating what he would think about how his Experimental Prototype Community of Tomorrow (EPCOT) turned out. Of course, we all know and love what the park has become over the years, but it’s hard not to imagine what could have been and what role the community could have played in revolutionizing modern society. However, I think Walt Disney would have mixed feelings about what EPCOT turned into.

First, there’s no doubt that he would be disappointed that his elaborate city structure never truly became a reality. However, based on his great desire to learn, I truly believe he would be impressed by what EPCOT became. The vision for the park was a place where people could be entertained and educated at the same time. While that isn’t anywhere close to Walt’s plans,  I honestly believe he would have appreciated the vision.

Above all, I can guarantee that he would be truly amazed by today’s technology and it’s influence on the parks across the board. While the company’s goals in creating the experiences aren’t always perfect, it’s hard to overlook the incredible innovation they have produced over the years. (photo: disneyavenue.blogspot.com)

An Overwhelming Joy of What He Began

As mentioned before, for Walt it seemed to be more about the memories his creations and ideas provided for the guests who visited his park each and every day. So, It’s hard to imagine the overwhelming joy that he would experience seeing what his theme park concept has become! The Disney parks create memories for thousands and quite possibly millions of guests each and every day around the world. While he may not have liked everything about today’s parks, without a doubt, being able to create that much joy and to see so many happy people entering and leaving the parks is something I’m sure he would be proud of. For him, it always seemed to be about the people and while Disney doesn’t always get everything right, none of us would be reading or writing about the company if it didn’t have a profound impact on our lives and the memories we have created over the years. In all honesty, that very well could be what it’s all about. Disney gives us an opportunity to be a kid again and to create memories that will last a lifetime with friends and family. I can guarantee Walt Disney would be proud of that! (photo: ulpnet.com)

The Jingle Cruise Begins it’s Holiday Run Today!

The Jingle Cruise Begins it’s Holiday Run Today!

Today, the classic Jingle Cruise returns to the Magic Kingdom! For those of you who may not know, the Jingle Cruise is a fairly new tradition at Walt Disney World. As a part of the holiday theming of the park, Disney carries over the holiday spirit onto the Jungle Cruise. As the classic attraction is decorated and prepared for the holidays, guests experience a subtle twist on the classic storyline.

(photo: disney.com)

A few new jokes are thrown in, the atmosphere changes ever so slightly, and the experience becomes even more uniquely Disney. The simple “overlay” has become somewhat of a tradition for the Magic Kingdom. Guests truly love the time honored attraction’s subtle variation and it truly puts you in the spirit of Christmas. Be sure to set sail on this attraction during your visit to the parks this holiday season! It’s only available for a small portion of the year!

5 Things We Will Never See Again at Walt Disney World

5 Things We Will Never See Again at Walt Disney World

Anyone who has been around Walt Disney World knows that the parks are continuously changing. These changes can bring exciting improvements but also take away some of the cult favorites. Here is my roundup of some of the most missed attractions and experiences at Walt Disney World.
5. Catastrophe Canyon
Who misses the giant waterfall hurtling your way as the fire roars and the tram shakes? I know I do, especially the part where I push my brother closer to the impending water (Sorry, Collin!). Since the restructuring of Hollywood Studios, Backlot Tours has gone away, along with the infamous Catastrophe Canyon. I know I’m not the only one who can share that there was enough power in that water cannon to shoot a basketball over the empire state building.
4. Tarzan Rocks
I can still hear “Strangers Like Me” ringing in my ears as everyone’s favorite ape man flies across the stage. This show was alive with powerful singers, talented skaters, and the best of Phil Collins flowing through the speakers. My heart was broken when Finding Nemo replaced the attraction in 2006. I’m a huge fan of Dory, but Tarzan Rocks had a special atmosphere that has not been captured with the new musical.
3. SpectroMagic Parade
Everyone’s heart was collectively broken in 2010 When SpectroMagic made its last run. The parade was known for its wonderfully identifiable soundtrack. Everybody with me now! Glimmering, shimmering, carouseling round the world tonight… The parade’s replacement was the Main Street Electrical Parade which has been recently retired as well.
2. The Osborne Family Spectacle of Dancing Lights
The holiday season in Disney World will never be the same without the 5 million lights adorning Hollywood Studios. It’s quite impossible to replace the feeling of walking down the Streets of America filled with Christmas music and glimmering lights. I have big hopes for the new Jingle Bell, Jingle BAM show, but I don’t believe Disney will ever be able to compete with the phenomena of the Spectacle of Lights.
1. Paper Fast Passes
I know there are a lot of hard feelings about this one. Everyone and their momma wishes Disney would go back to their old Fast Pass system. Gone are the days of hiking the length of the park to get a Space Mountain fast pass and head back to Thunder to use the one you got earlier. My brother and I were pros at acquiring a stack of fast passes for the day. While I’m always excited for a new accessory, the fun of Magic Bands will never replace the old system.

Disney is known for innovation, but sometimes we all wish they would stick with the old too. What is on your list? If you could bring something back to Disney World, what would you choose?
