"Departed Disney": West Center Street and the Story of the Emporium Expansion

“Departed Disney”: West Center Street and the Story of the Emporium Expansion

The story of West Center Street is one of those simple things that quite often gets completely overlooked in the history of the Magic Kingdom. While it’s disappearance wasn’t all that long ago, there’s very little record of the street itself, and little to no reference to it within the Magic Kingdom today.

In 1971 when the Magic Kingdom first opened to the public Main Street U.S.A. looked quite similar, but also vastly different due to two major changes. If you walk down Main Street today, you’ll notice something a little odd. When you get to the heart of the walkway (about halfway down), you’ll notice a small alleyway type street that leads off to the right hand side. While that street still has a name, East Center Street, it begs the question, “What happened to West Center Street?” Oddly enough, in many ways it’s still there, but in other ways it has completely gone away.

So, if you’re standing on Main Street and look West (to your left) you’ll notice a section of the Emporium that sits back away from the rest of the storefronts. Technically, this is what’s left of West Center Street. In 2001 Disney decided to utilize the space that was once a street to fill in the Emporium so that it encompassed the entire left hand side of Main Street.

While, from a business perspective, this was a quite understandable and smart decision, many things were lost as a result of “filling the gap” of the Emporium. Also, when that change was made, the street lost a bit of that small town U.S.A. feel that it once possessed through a variety of shops that were not connected. It was truly a “small town” experience that seemed to simply defy time and modern day advances.

As with everything Disney does, they developed a story to explain the expansion from the store owner’s perspective. According to Disney lore, the shop owner continued to make advances to his store, including everything from gas lights, to more modern styling, but his greatest representation of the store’s success was an expansion that increased the size of his creation.

Honestly, it’s a clever story, but it’s hard not to wish what was left behind will someday return (despite knowing that will probably never happen). Before the expansion, West Center Street featured an array of unique stores including: The Greenhouse Flower Shop, The New Century Clock Shop, the Hallmark Card Shop, and the Harmony Barber Shop (which was later relocated).

For years, the Greenhouse Flower Shop and the floral touches that flowed over into the streets created a truly welcoming atmosphere for guests. Sadly, the Greenhouse Shop was the first to go in 1984 as the Emporium began it’s first expansion a short 13 years after the park debuted. This decision is truly understandable though, because it is quite difficult to sell plants and plant related items to guests touring a theme park. It was a wonderful concept and one that brightened the street and created character through theming, but unfortunately in the business world making money tends to overrule authenticity. Top: (photo: imaginerding.com)

The other locations, the Hallmark Card Shop and New Century Clock Shop, both are very difficult to find information about and even more difficult to find images of. However, as you would expect, the Hallmark store sold specialty items, gift wrap, and greeting cards. The New Century Clock Shop also sold exactly what you would expect, clocks. Again, while these are simple stores, it’s truly amazing how much one expansion influenced in a very short amount of time.

When these stores disappeared and the expansion was built, the story of these unique stores ultimately fell away over time. Today, it’s even hard to imagine the left side of main street as anything more than the Emporium as it has stood for quite some time. Don’t get me wrong, the Emporium is  one of the best stores for Disney merchandise on Disney property, but it’s hard not to miss the unique gifts that could be purchased and brought home with you in the “lost” days of Disney. At that point in time, a souvenir from Walt Disney World was more than a t-shirt or a souvenir mug, but rather something that would bring to mind a specific place and a specific memory that place created for you at one particular moment. Today, Disney tends to be a world of repeating souvenirs that are, for the most part, not specific to the location. Just as before, it’s a smart marketing and business decision, but it’s truly amazing how some things have changed and how some elements of “unique” souvenirs are returning slowly.

When comes right down to it, just like I said in our last post in the series (“Departed Disney”: A Look Back at the Town Square Cafe ), Disney has always been a place that accepted change and developed as the world developed around it. Unfortunately, nostalgia doesn’t keep a theme park continuously popular, but I do believe that these elements of “Departed Disney” should be shared so that we can appreciate the ideas and concepts that have developed the “World of Disney Parks” into what they have become today!

A New Character’s in Flight Balloon Has Officially Debuted

A New Character’s in Flight Balloon Has Officially Debuted

While just a short while ago Disney released that the Characters in Flight hot air ballon at Disney Springs would be disappearing for a short time, today it has officially returned. For those of you who may be new to the Disney Parks and Disney Springs, Characters in Flight is a tethered hot air balloon that guests can pay to go up in and experience a unique view of Disney from above while eliminating the long term commitment of a free floating hot air ballon ride.

For quite some time the balloon featured a vast array of characters as a part of the balloons exterior design. As the transformation from Downtown Disney to Disney Springs is almost complete, it is believed that a new design was developed to better fit the aesthetic of the new atmosphere.

While the new design is somewhat similar to the old design, the new balloon has been inflated and will be soaring above Disney Springs periodically. Here’s a glance at the new look scheduled to reopen to guests January 14th:

Disney Dining Hidden Gem: Floatworks

Disney Dining Hidden Gem: Floatworks
by: guide4wdw – Caitlin

It’s no secret that one of my favorite things about Disney is the food. I’m back to discuss a hidden gem in Disney dining located at the French Quarter Resort. Sassagoula Floatworks and Food Factory takes you straight to the Deep South with its New Orleans inspired cuisine. During our last Disney trip, I had the opportunity to dine at this impressive location. I know what you’re thinking, isn’t that a food court? And yes, technically it is. But, Floatworks is full of charm and unique menu selections. Here is the breakdown of what is offered in each section.

Grill Shop
The highlight of this section is the fried chicken on a biscuit. This entrée is truly southern in style and is served with generous portions. The crawfish mac & cheese burger is another great taste of New Orleans that can be found at the Grill.

The Bakery
It’s no secret that the gem of the French Quarter are the beignets that are served in the Floatworks bakery. Ask for yours with caramel sauce – you won’t regret it! There are also several other great options including a beignet gelato sundae and Mardi Gras king cake.
Carving Shop
If you’re on the dining plan, this is the stop for you. Ask for the prime rib to get the most bang for your buck. Entrees in this section are also served with tasty side item options: red beans and rice, mac and cheese, and mashed potatoes.

Pizza & Pasta Shop
This stop offers a create-your-own pizza for traditional folks. You can also try a New Orleans classic – shrimp and grits.

Po’ Boy Shop
Here’s the star of the show for me. Floatworks offers some great Louisiana favorites here including Gumbo and and Po’ Boy sandwiches with catfish, shrimp, or beef. These items are cooked on the spot and full of flavor. I was thoroughly impressed with my entrée.
Floatworks now sits at the top of my list for counter service options at Disney. If you’re a dining plan fan, this is a great place to visit. There is a wide variety of choices that are quite different from your usual burger and fry options. The beignets alone are worth your trip out to the French Quarter. The resort is beautiful, and the food is quite memorable. Next time you’re near the Disney Springs Resorts, don’t forget to stop by Floatworks.

Disneyland Now Offering Paid Add-On Fastpass and Photopass Combination Offer

Disneyland Now Offering Paid Add-On Fastpass and Photopass Combination Offer

While I very rarely post about Disneyland in California, Disney has decided to try something new with the Fastpass and Photopass systems that is certainly worth sharing. The Disney Parks Blog announced today that the Disneyland resort will begin offering a paid offering which would include unlimited photopass downloads and the option to book fastpass selections online.

However, they did not mention if these selections will be made in advance as they are at Walt Disney World (free of charge at WDW) or if the mobile passes will be simply out of convenience for guests. Either way, the price for the service is $10 per day as an introductory rate which could change over time. Annual Passholders will be offered single day or multi-day offers, but prices for multi-day offers have not been released. Disney is calling the service MaxPass and it will be linked to the Disneyland App.

While currently Disney has released very few details about the program, they have stated that more information will be released in the near future.

Above all, I should reiterate, this is not something that is required of guests to purchase to utilize the fastpass service. Fastpasses will remain completely free of charge and the current kiosk system at Disneyland is also remaining available to all guests. The fastpass system will also be expanded to Toy Story Mania and The Matterhorn according to Disney’s release.

Are you looking forward to the add-on offering? Let us know your thoughts down below!

New Geyser Point Dining Location Set to Open Very Soon!

New Geyser Point Dining Location Set to Open Very Soon!

Just a short time ago we brought you an update on the Boulder Ridge Villas and the new dining location, Geyser Point, in A Closer Look at the Additions Coming to Disney’s Wilderness LodgeToday, we have a little bit more information about when at least the new dining location may debut.

According to guests (mainly Disney Vacation Club Members) staying at the Wilderness Lodge Villas, a notification was sent to guests stating that the new dining opportunity is set to open as soon as February. While no specific date has been set for it’s debut, progress seems to be coming along quite nicely.

Just a few weeks ago, when our original article debuted, we took these pictures of the progress:

The new location is set to feature a simple menu with mostly burgers, chicken, and other typical Disney offerings. While that seems like an odd menu choice with Roaring Fork and the Trout Pass very close by offering very similar items, hopefully Disney may surprise us with some more unique options when the location finally debuts. For now, a least we know when it is scheduled to open!

Hidden Mickey Alert:
If you are in fact staying at this resort in the near future, be sure to look for a rather exciting “Hidden Mickey” just above the fireplace in the main lobby area. Here’s a hint at wear you can find it!
Know someone staying at the resort soon or a DVC member? SHARE this article with them! Thanks!

Concept Art and Connection to The Society of Explorers and Adventurers Debuts for New Typhoon Lagoon Attraction

Concept Art and Connection to The Society of Explorers and Adventurers Debuts for New Typhoon Lagoon Attraction!

by: guide4wdw – Collin
twitter: @guide4disney
instagram: @guide4disney

Today, Disney has debuted a simple glance at a new attraction coming to Typhoon Lagoon. The attraction, which originally was announced under the name, “Miss Fortune Falls”, has taken on a new title, “Miss Adventure Falls.” However, what’s more interesting than the name change is the connection this new attraction is set to have with the Society of Explorers and Adventurers.

The society itself has recently popped up in quite a few Disney attractions including: Mystic Manor, Jungle Skipper Canteen, Big Thunder Mountain Railroad, and quite a few other dining locations and attractions across the Disney Parks and Resorts. While many of you may not remember the society which originated with the Adventurer’s Club at Downtown Disney long before the transformation into Disney Springs, it’s influence is slowly returning to the parks in a big way. While you know my thoughts on that possibility if you’ve read (Could The Adventurer’s Club be Returning in an Entirely New Way?), it’s quite exciting to see Disney using the elaborate story that has developed over the years to further enhance a new attraction.

According to legend, Captain Mary Oceaneer (who supposedly owns the falls) was once an explorer and treasure hunter who wound up in a massive typhoon which scattered her treasures all across the area. For the time being, this is all we really know about the connection to the Society of Explorers and Adventurers, but more details are sure to develop when the attraction opens in March of this year

For now, here’s the latest concept art which was released earlier today:

The attraction itself features an automatic lift hill, both covered and uncovered sections, and may even include some audio-animatronics throughout your journey. While this is not technically a water coaster, due to the fact that it is only assisted on the lift hill, it will be a welcomed design for guests with mobility constraints or that are unable to climb multiple stairs.

While it’s hard to believe this isn’t simply a response to Universal’s upcoming Volcano Bay water park, it’s nice to see Disney investing in new entertainment for Typhoon Lagoon. While there is nothing quite like Blizzard Beach and Typhoon Lagoon (and their consistent awards attest to that), new additions and new ideas are always welcomed. Unfortunately, this addition also brought forth the removal of Shark Reef, an attraction which guests could enter a “tank”-style pool with live aquatic life. While the experience was beloved by many guests and was quite popular it is understood that the upkeep costs for the experience greatly influenced it’s replacement.
So, what do you think? Let us know down below and be sure to SHARE this article with a friend that will be looking forward to the attraction! Thanks!

"Departed Disney": A Look Back at the Town Square Cafe

by: guide4wdw – Collin

There are many aspects of the Disney parks that have come and gone over the years. Of course, change is often for the better, but it’s easy to let the past slip away from us and many of the details get lost through generations of new ideas. So, as an attempt to share some of the little aspects that developed Walt Disney World into what it has become today, a new series of articles is coming your way!

As a bit of a Disney history nut myself, I truly enjoy sharing the little known aspects of the parks or even a few things that have simply fallen away over the years. While a few of these stories you may know or may have even experienced first hand, there’s something special about looking back at many of these elements that have warmed the hearts of guests for generations. So, If you like this type of post and would like to read all of the ones in the series developing over the next few weeks, do me big favor and subscribe to our page over on the right and be sure to invite your friends to read these articles! Your shares truly help us grow this Disney community!

Today, the series begins with a location many of you may or may not remember, the Town Square Cafe! While that name may not ring a bell for most guests, a more recent development may in fact be quite recognizable, Tony’s Town Square Restaurant. While the menu is nothing like it used to be, it’s presence on Main Street has remained largely the same.

When the Town Square Cafe first debuted on October 1, 1971, it featured a prominent sponsorship with the Oscar Mayer brand. Key members of the cast, including “Little Oscar” himself, created a unique environment for guests of all ages and backgrounds. As guests dined on various menu items (including hotdogs, as the branding implies) a special gift was often passed out to guests, Oscar Mayer’s classic “Weiner Whistles.” While it wasn’t much, I can imagine a vast number of guests who had the opportunity to dine here left with a variety of wonderful memories and stories that stuck with them for generations.

While simply put, this was a unique dining experience, when you really think about it, some of the simplest experiences at Walt Disney World create the greatest memories with friends and family! We don’t always remember what we ate, or our favorite attraction, but rather the simple smile that crossed the face of the ones we care the most about. It’s these little details that help create the “Disney Difference.” An attraction may fade away over time, but a conversation with Little Oscar, a meal with family, or simply a story these experiences created can truly last a lifetime.

While in 1981 Disney decided to close the door on the Town Square Cafe chapter of this location, a new idea replaced this short lived classic, Tony’s Town Square Restaurant. With a new theme (Lady and the Tramp) the location breathed new life and has remained virtually unchanged as it continues on today. The menu has varied quite a bit over time, and often faces scrutiny from certain guests, but the location has always held enormous potential. Who really knows what’s next, but with Disney, there’s always something on the horizon.

The park are always changing and developing as Walt intended from the very beginning, but sometimes it’s great to appreciate how it has all developed. We can never truly improve the future without recognizing our past and finding new ways to grow. The Town Square Cafe has certainly been missed, but as Walt once said, “We keep moving forward, opening new doors, and doing new things, because we’re curious and curiosity keeps leading us down new paths.”

"Sharing the Magic" Statue Disappearing For Lengthy Refurbishment Beginning Soon

“Sharing the Magic” Statue Disappearing For Lengthy Refurbishment Beginning Soon

by: guide4wdw – Collin
twitter: @guide4disney
instagram: @guide4disney

As one of the stranger refurbishments we’ve shared, a Disney icon is going away for a fairly lengthy amount of time beginning as soon as January 6th (today). The “Sharing the Magic” statue which is typically located near the flag pole on Main Street U.S.A., but often moves closer to the fire station around the holidays, will be undergoing a multiple-month  refurbishment. It will return to it’s typical location in March.

The statue proudly features Roy O. Disney seated next to Minnie Mouse on a park bench in the heart of Town Square. The statue has always been a welcoming sign to guests entering the park and a great photo opportunity.

While thousands of guests take pictures with the statue each week, a majority of those guests don’t really understand the history and details of the statue itself.

The statue is actually the last of three commissioned works of Disney Legend Blaine Gibson. While that name may or may not stand out in your mind, I guarantee you know his work. The first statue was created for Disneyland in 1993 and then later a near identical one was created for Walt Disney World in 1995 and they both became known as The Partner’s Statue. The Partners Statue, which you are sure to recognize, is the classic image of Walt Disney hand-in-hand with Mickey Mouse in the heart of both theme parks

While each of these statues holds their own story, the “Sharing the Magic” piece itself has a variety of unique features. First, when the statue was originally placed, it was actually located behind the fence, away from typical guest areas. However, that didn’t stop a majority of guests from hopping the fence and taking a picture sitting on the bench with the two Disney icons! Later, Disney gave in and moved the statue to the other side of the fence where it has remained for many years.

Second, despite what many guests assume, Minnie is placed close to Roy on the bench not so that other guests could sit with the pair, but rather to show how approachable Roy O. Disney could be. Roy was not typically “center stage” in the creation of the parks, but rather typically “behind the scenes.”

Lastly, and quite possibly one of the most heart felt aspects of the creation, Gibson created a statue where Roy is intentionally supporting Minnie’s hand from below. While that seems to be a simple gesture, the design intended to show how Roy supported his brother’s vision for a place that very few people could dream up.

New Baby Elephant Born at Disney’s Animal Kingdom

New Baby Elephant Born at Disney’s Animal Kingdom

A new baby elephant calf has arrived at Animal Kingdom and is officially out for guests to view! The female elephant calf, Stella, is roaming the Savannah at Kilimanjaro Safaris. Stella is the third calf for the mother elephant, Donna, who is 28 years old. This new calf is the parks seventh elephant and brings the total number of elephants on the property to 10 total.

According to Disney:
“Donna became pregnant through natural breeding in January 2015 and received extensive pre-natal care throughout her pregnancy. In addition to regular ultrasounds, veterinarians, scientists and elephant managers monitored Donna’s hormone levels on a daily basis to help them determine when she would give birth.”

For years, Disney has been a proud and important piece of the conservation effort aimed to increase elephant numbers and learn more about the animal through research and understanding.

To see Stella for yourself, head on over to Animal Kingdom or check out the video released by Disney below!

For quite a few years, Joffrey’s Coffee has been one of the best coffee offerings at Walt Disney World parks and resorts. Many guests have made the multiple Joffrey’s locations across property a must do for any Disney vacation. (Be sure to try the giant donuts!)

Just recently, Joffrey’s has officially decided to offer Disney Annual Passholders a 20% discount on all coffees and food items. While this does exclude alcohol at all locations that serve it, the discount is a welcomed change for those who visit the parks regularly.

(We are not associated with Joffrey’s Coffee and Tea Co.)
