A Closer Look at a Detail of the Columbia Harbour House You’ve Likely Overlooked

A Closer Look at a Detail of the Columbia Harbour House You’ve Likely Overlooked

by: guide4wdw – Collin
For many of us, Disney vacations have been a part of our lives for quite some time, but no matter how many time you go, there’s always something new to learn about the parks. There are so many simple hidden gems and story building details that so many guests look right past. However, Disney takes that extra step to add those details to enrich the overall experience despite the majority of guests looking right past them. The Disney difference truly is in the details.
For example, many of you have likely eaten at and/or walked passed the Columbia Harbour House restaurant at Magic Kingdom. The dining establishment could even be your favorite counter service offering in the park, but I can almost guarantee that you’ve never taken a closer look at the sign hanging just outside of the location.
The sign itself essentially tells what the restaurant is called, but upon closer examination, a greater backstory develops that really ties in the theming of Liberty Square. If you look closely, the sign features an eagle which is similar, yet strikingly different than the United States Eagle (found on the dollar bill). This particle representation shows the eagle clutching arrows in it’s right claw and an olive branch in it’s left. This symbol based representations develop a visual image of the state of our nation at the time represented in this portion of Liberty Square. Right before the Revolutionary War our country was broken in many ways and preparing for a fight (as represented by the arrows) and the peace we experienced after the war is represented by the olive branch. As you may notice in the image (above), the eagle is also crying and the stature of the animal is very somber and looking down and away.
Today, the eagle we find on the dollar bill is very much reversed from what is seen on the Columbia Harbor House sign. The eagle found on the dollar, better known as our national symbol, clutches the olive branch in it’s right (presumably dominant) claw and faces that claw with it’s head held high. The peace is favored over war and the proud symbol of our nation represents that reality today.
As you can see, this is certainly a detail that Disney could have easily left out, but as you go through Liberty Square you can follow a path of our nation if you start your journey from Fantasyland. You start your journey looking towards America and potential opportunities that could arise after migrating from the east. As you move a few steps into the land Disney develops a greater story of the struggle for freedom that developed our nation over time.
As mentioned before, many guests will never notice these detail, but for Walt Disney, story was always the key to the experience. If it didn’t tell a story, it wasn’t worth developing. Walt was a story teller that brought his stories to life for guests to explore and understand on a grand scale across the parks, while allowing guests who simply want to go and ride the attractions the opportunity to do so. The history and these stories simply add to the overall experience because the destination isn’t about the history, but rather the history and the story are a part of the larger scale experience.

Disney Gives Guests an Inside Look at the Beautiful New Copper Creek Villas and Cabins

Disney Gives Guests an Inside Look at the New Copper Creek Villas and Cabins at Disney’s Wilderness Lodge Resort!

by: guide4wdw – Collin
Disney has just released a short video showcasing the new Copper Creek Villas and Cabins that will be joining the Wilderness Lodge on July 17th! After a small press event yesterday, first hand impressions are coming out that rave about the quality and theming of the new villas and cabins.

While this is slated as a DVC expansion, any guests booking a Disney vacation can reserve these accommodations just as you could a typical resort room. The expansion simply allows DVC members to buy into that particular resort in the vacation club system.

The new offerings feature theming based on Pacific Northwest railroad operations and a subtle nod towards Walt Disney’s love of steam engines and railroads overall. The villas will be available in many formats featuring the typical 1, 2, and 3 – bedroom offerings, as is typical of Disney villas. Of course, the crown jewell of the expansion is the new cabins. The cabins are two bedroom and two bathroom accommodations complete with a beautiful porch, fireplace, and private hot tub overlooking the water of Bay Lake!

Around July 4th of this year, I will be staying at the Wilderness Lodge for about a week. So, once we arrive, we’ll take you along with us to explore what we can see of the expansion right before it officially debuts on July 17th (expect photos). The Geyser Point dining location and bar has already debuted and is receiving outstanding reviews. The atmosphere created by the location’s theming and placement near the water looks to set up an outstanding dining experience. The overall food focuses on quick service dining, but also offers a full drink menu and bar. We’ll certainly share some images and maybe even a review of that particular location while staying at the resort.
Here’s a look at what Disney just released:

If you’d like to say hello while we’re at WDW (July 1st – 8th), feel free to let me know and we’ll see what we can do! If there’s enough interest we may consider a meet-up event.

Splash Mountain Set to Close for 3 Months Starting Late Summer!

Splash Mountain Set to Close for 3 Months Starting Late Summer!

by: guide4wdw – Collin
In a somewhat surprising move, Disney will be closing the Splash Mountain attraction for just over three months beginning August 28th and continuing on into late fall (November 16th). While typical refurbishments for this attraction take place in the winter months, this extended refurbishment will not.
While it has not been stated directly, this long term refurbishment could be a result of the multiple small scale problems the attraction has faced. In the past few weeks, multiple images of the attraction closed for short periods of time have popped up across social media platforms. Of course, this is only speculation and Disney has simply stated that it will be down for a typical long term refurbishment.
The attraction will be available to guests most of the summer and should be running on it’s typical schedule throughout that time period. If more information arises about the time frame or other elements of the closure, we’ll certainly keep you up to date.
If you or someone you know is interested in partnering with/sponsoring our site, feel free to contact us any time! We are currently looking to partner with a travel related (preferably Disney) company so if you know anyone please send them our way! Open to banners, referral links and side bar placement! Thanks!

Incredibly Popular Enchanted Rose Souvenir Cup Now Available at Gaston’s Tavern

Enchanted Rose Souvenir Cup Now Available at Gaston’s Tavern

by: guide4wdw – Collin
(photo: chipandco)
A short time ago, the internet blew up with interest when Disney launched a souvenir cup at Disneyland featuring the prominent rose from the Beauty and the Beast film(s). The cup, which is only available at a few select locations, recently made it’s journey to the Magic Kingdom and arrived at the Be Our Guest restaurant at Walt Disney World. However, as a result of the popularity of the cup at both parks, Disney has just recently began selling them at Gaston’s Tavern as well!
The cost of the cup is $13.00 and the price includes a fountain drink of your choice. There is also a limit placed on the amount of the cups you can purchase at one time (currently 5). If you’re interested, be sure to check this out today because they will likely sell out fast, especially since you no longer have to have the coveted reservation at Be Our Guest to purchase one.
In many cases, the resale of these souvenirs are going for very high prices on eBay and other resale sites. So, if you are wanting to purchase one, be sure to contact someone in the area you know or visit the parks as soon as possible to pick one up without paying the incredible uncharge found online in the resale market.

A Look Back at the Only Forgotten Walt Disney World Theme Park – River Country

by: guide4wdw – Collin
Throughout the extensive history of the Disney parks and resorts, certain elements of the “Disney Experience” have changed or developed into completely new concepts over time. However, in a few exceedingly rare cases, Disney essentially gives up on an idea or simply abandons a development. For those of you who have been following along with the site, you may remember an article I wrote called:The Forgotten Walt Disney World Resorts That Could Have Changed Everything. That particular article focuses on many of the resorts that Disney has abandoned concepts for or actual structures of over the years. Sadly, Disney also abandoned one particular theme park along the way!

That park, which is the topic of our conversation today, was known as Disney’s River Country! Many of you who have grown up in the Disney realm may distinctly remember this particular park. For nearly every guest who experienced it, just stating the name brings back memories of joy and exploration from their time in the park. River Country grew from being simply Disney’s first water park into a legend in the world of Disney history. It had an iconic status among guests, and the concept itself seemed to bring families together in a way that was simple, nostalgic, and themed while remaining rustic at the very same time.

The water park, which debuted in 1976, thrilled guests of all ages with Slippery Slide Falls, Barrel Bridge, White Water Rapids, Bay Cove, and many other attractions. Perhaps the most famous aspect of the experience was it’s “connection” to Bay Lake. As you can imagine, the arrangement caused many problems (which we’ll get to later on), but it also added to the experience of being surrounded by nature at a good ole fashioned swimming hole. The River Country experience wasn’t about the newest technology or the greatest new invention but rather an old fashion, family friendly, form of entertainment.

Unfortunately, in the early 80’s Disney faced a strange concern, amoeba that caused deadly infections. The infection, which has been found across the state of Florida along with other particular states can affect those who swim in warm natural bodies of water. Despite the rising concerns, Disney kept the park open after a young boy supposedly died of the infection claiming that it was contracted at River County. There was certainly no way to prove the link and Disney kept the park open for years after the incident.

Soon after this problem, Disney developed it’s second (Typhoon Lagoon: 1989) and third (Blizzard Beach: 1995) water parks which are still around today. River Country remained popular despite the competition of the sister properties, but faced it’s largest concern in the time following the September 11th attacks.

After 9/11, as many of you well know, tourism dropped significantly and even caused brief closures of some of Disney’s most popular resorts. After a fairly successful season at River country in 2001, despite the loss of tourism, the park did not return to operation the following year. The last comment released to press about the experience that year was that it would reopen if the guest demand was high enough. To this day, the park remains closed and essentially abandoned after over 15 years.

Speculation about it’s closure arises constantly, but a few more reputable claims have developed over the years. The first of the more interesting claims believe that when Florida  developed a law that all water park attractions must be chlorinated, the filtration system for the lake water could not be modified to meet the regulations. The other major claim is that the amoeba problem in the lake was far more severe than originally expected.

No matter what the actual case of it’s closure may have been, perhaps the greatest element of River Country’s expansive past is that upon closure, the area was not destroyed, but rather untouched and abandoned for years on end. Even today, the park remains largely untouched with the exception of the natural destruciton of the attractions over time.

The only publicly known statement about the park in recent years was that the deep water pool, seen in the images above, was being filled in with concrete in 2016. The change many believe was sparked by the growing mosquito concern in central and southern Florida, as well as the Alligator incident which recently made the news and affected many aspects of the Disney parks.

While many, or quite possibly all, of these claims could be true, the park remains ultimately untouched. As far as we know, Disney has no plans to bring the park back, and would likely never even attempt to do so, personally I would love to see it reemerge with the rumored expansion of Fort Wilderness to include DVC. A recreation of the project, perhaps with a concrete “lagoon” rather than the lake spill over would make for a legendary pool in the case of a DVC expansion. Of course, that’s all wishful thinking, but as with many things Disney develops over the years, a good idea never truly gets forgotten.

Here’s a closer look at River Country in it’s prime in 1977 as a part of a Wonderful World of Disney episode where the Mouseketeers visit Walt Disney World!

River Country has a rich history, but that history wouldn’t be complete without mentioning the trespassing that has occurred onto the abandoned property over the years. Before continuing I must say that you should never try this yourself and I have never personally been anywhere near River Country. Doing so can in fact get you banned for life from all Disney parks and resorts and could be extremely dangerous.

With the parks location (surprisingly close to Fort Wilderness), it is quite easy to get to the abandoned site and very few attempts were made to cover up it’s existence for many years. Over time, guests of all ages scaled the fences and got an up close and personal look at River Country long after it’s closure. To the surprise of many, the park was nearly untouched. Pictures of cast members and guests were still in many buildings, files were still there from the parks days of operation, and the entire layout remained largely unchanged. It was nearly identical to it’s closing state in 2001 with the exception of grown up shrubbery. While many who explored the abandoned property faced strict consequences, others shared that content across the web and much of it can be viewed online today. Enjoy their videos but never try to recreate them yourself.

Personally, not having toured River Country during it’s prime is one of the very few regrets I have about the Disney parks. Of course, even at the time of it’s closing in 2001, I was only 5 years old and likely would have never remembered it even if I would have experienced it first hand. At that point, water parks weren’t a part of our Disney experience, and that could have been the case for many families considering it’s closure.

River Country is one of those things that is distinctly Disney, but no longer really Disney at all. It has a rich history and an elaborate story to tell, but the experience will likely never return. However, the memories and experiences shared by families there will live on for generations!

It’s Official: Walt Disney World Will Be Getting A Club 33!

It’s Official: WDW Will Be Getting A Club 33!

by: guide4wdw – Collin
A few short months ago, we brought you an honest opinion about how Club 33 is a somewhat logical addition to the Disney World Parks and today it is official! Walt Disney World will be getting a Club 33 type location at each of the four parks. While the locations will not be identical, it is assumed that the same name or similar names will be given to each of these locations.
(Photo: Disney)
Disney has released very little information about the new offering, but those who are interested in becoming a member of one of these clubs are encouraged to email: WDWClub33@disneyworld.com for more information.
All we know right now is that more information will be available in the Fall of this year. The particular theming is supposed to be based on the adventures of Walt and Lillian, but no specifics of each location have debuted quite yet. Currently, we do know that these memberships will be separate from those at Disneyland.
We’ll certainly share more details of the locations in the coming months as they are made available!

Currently this could be speculation and has not been addressed directly by Disney. However, the email address provided returns a message that guarantees more information will be coming about the project.

We have contacted the address and will post an image of the response when we get the information back… Stay Tuned!

UPDATE: Here is the response that I received… please excuse my mass amount of unread emails on my personal email account.

"The Magic Kingdom" is Now Officially Named Simply "Magic Kingdom"

“The Magic Kingdom” is Now Officially Named Simply “Magic Kingdom”

by: guide4wdw – Collin
If you ignored the title of this article and just looked at the following two photos, could you spot a difference?

(Top Photo: WDWNT)
In a strange variation, Disney has just recently changed the name of “The Magic Kingdom” to simply “Magic Kingdom.” While the change occurred a few weeks ago, social media didn’t  really pick up on the change right away.
Obviously, it’s a simple variation of the name of the park, but by simply dropping the “The” from the title, many signs throughout the parks, as well as the ticket and transportation center will slowly need to be changed over. The interesting part of the story is that the smaller portion of the sign depicting the “population” of The Magic Kingdom has also disappeared.
Of course, Disney did not acknowledge the change publicly (at least to my knowledge), and there has been no reason stated for the variation of the title. It looks as if Disney tried to slip one under the radar of Disney guests and now even many major news sources have picked up on the variation.
So, what do you think? Trivial change or something that may irritate some guests?

A Simple Memory From the Magic Kingdom – Share Your Favorite Memory with Us!

A Simple Memory From the Magic Kingdom – Don’t Forget to Share Your Favorite Memory with Us!
by: guide4wdw – Collin
For many of us who visit the parks time after time, certain memories tend to stand out from the rest. Of course, each Disney vacation tells it’s own individual story and creates memories of a lifetime, but a select few experiences will always remain in the forefront of our minds. We all have a story tell, and the more you hear these stories, the more you start to recognize that memories aren’t always about the place, the attractions, or even the food, but rather the people you spend your time with in the parks.

Personally, for one reason or another, an incredibly simple experience will always stand out in my mind. Quite a few years ago, long before the redevelopment of the Magic Kingdom Hub, my family was looking for a place to “claim our spot” for Wishes and happened to end up right next to a signboard that depicted a layout of the parks. At the time, the board was located just on the left hand side as you made your way toward the castle, very close to where the Hub Grass (new viewing area) is today. To this day, I have no idea how we ended up there or why we even picked that spot, but it certainly wasn’t ideal. Fortunately though, the story doesn’t end there.
The fireworks began and the show went on as it does each and every night of the year. However, as we watched, I remember looking around at first my family, but also the people around us and something about that experience just stuck with me. I can remember standing there, leaning up against that park map like it was yesterday. I’m not exactly sure why, but that outstandingly simple moment surrounded by family has always stuck with me. I’m not sure if it was the joy that I saw on the faces around me as I glanced around from a new perspective, or simply the happiness the experience helped create, but there was something special about that moment that I’ll never forget.
Either way, it’s simply astounding to me that one man’s incredible dream created all of this for each of us to enjoy. No matter how old you are or if it’s your first visit or your 100th visit, you always leave the parks with a smile on your face and a new memory to share for years to come.
We all have those memories that stand out in our minds, and quite honestly it may be one of the many things that creates these outstanding online communities, as well as many in person friendships with other Disney enthusiasts. I’ve said it before, but I’ll gladly say it again, I truly think that our appreciation for this place goes far beyond the attractions and relies more on the memories these attractions and experiences create. Think about it for a minute. When you think through the best experiences you’ve had at Disney, what comes to mind? For most of us, those memories won’t be of a particular attraction, but rather a result of the attraction and the people we got to share those moments with.
Cherish those memories, and remember to enjoy every moment of those outstanding scenarios. Life’s too short to rush through the simple joys of these experiences. Appreciate every detail and you’ll be surprised what you remember years down the road!

If you have a memory that stands out far above the rest, be sure to share it with us down below or on Facebook/Twitter! We want to hear about those experiences!

Bob Gurr’s One of a Kind Contemporary Resort Story That You May Have Never Heard!

Bob Gurr’s One of a Kind Contemporary Resort Story That You May Have Never Heard!

by: guide4wdw – Collin
In the World of Disney Theme Park entertainment, we often witness the thrills of the attractions, the details of the experiences, and the outstanding memories these oh so special elements create. In doing so, many guests tend to overlook the history that brought many aspects of these parks to life and the pivotal role so many incredibly talented individuals played in making these parks a reality.
Perhaps my favorite example of this type of a cast member is the legendary Imagineer, Bob Gurr. While Walt was typically the mastermind behind the large scale ideas, individuals like Bob made those dreams a reality in a way that many of us overlook. So, today we’re taking a look back at an honest legend of the Disney theme parks and sharing one of my favorite stories in the history of Walt Disney World’s development.
Before we get started, let’s take a look at Bob Gurr’s Disney story in order to truly appreciate the role he has played over the years throughout the Disney organization.
Long before Gurr became a Disney Legend in 2004, he was hired by Walt Disney himself in the early days of Disneyland. Originally, Bob worked with Walt to develop the miniature automobiles for the classic Disneyland and Walt Disney World Attraction, Autopia (Tomorrowland Speedway later on at Disney World). This was not intended to be a permanent position, but after seeing the incredible work that he was capable of, Walt decided to bring Gurr on board as a permanent member of WED Enterprises which later became known as Walt Disney Imagineering. After accepting the role, Bob continued on with the company for over 40 years and even remains a crucial part of a select few projects with the organization, even at 85 years old! (photo: lamag.com)

Over the years, he worked with Disney to develop many of the Disney attractions that have or were at some point an iconic piece of the Disney puzzle. Some of his greatest work were roles in such attractions as the Matterhorn, the Skyway (which debuted at the 1964 World’s Fair), Abraham Lincoln at Great Moments With Mr. Lincoln, and of course the the design of the Disney Monorails. That monorail design is where today’s story begins.
In a time frame of large steel transportation, Gurr worked on a project that would change the idea of transportation. While the idea was still early in development, Bob Gurr tells a story of how one day the conceptual idea just hit him in his kitchen and right then and there he developed a rough sketch of the idea on his kitchen counter. The very next day, he took that simple drawing to his office and developed the concept sketch many of us have grown to recognize at and around the Disney theme parks (see above).
That simple idea was so visionary that it eventually developed into a variation of the Monorails we ride in at the Disney theme parks to this day, however during the construction of the Contemporary, Gurr got to test his conceptual design on a grand scale.
On Labor Day, 1971, the construction team working on the contemporary came to Imagineering and stated that they weren’t sure if the design of the building could withstand the vibration of the monorail traveling through the structure. Bob, being the outgoing and determined individual that made him so very successful guaranteed them that the structure would hold up. However, they weren’t completely convinced. So, on that Labor Day night, after most of the employees had left for the day, Bob Gurr set out to prove his concept first hand!
Determined that the development was flawless, he took a seismogram and attached it to the track as an example of the vibration and proceeded to board the monorail and start the loop. Rather than simply gliding through the building, he took the vehicle up to the top speed of 43mph and blew straight through the Contemporary in what he calls the most reckless thing he ever got to do with a monorail at Walt Disney World! Outstandingly, the seismogram never moved. Astonished, the builders couldn’t believe what they saw so he jumped back in and repeated the process all over again!
He explained the experience in a few simple words saying, the small gap on each side of the monorail entering the building gets a whole lot smaller at 43mph! (imagine going through at that speed today!)
As you can see, Bob Gurr always focused on taking leaps of faith and truly living life to the fullest. We can all take something away from his frame of mind and take life one day at a time making the best of each and every situation. Problems will arise but enjoying each day of the life we have been given is far more important than the trivial problems we face each day.
Bob is a legend in more than one sense of the word, but perhaps his greatest legacy that will be left on the Disney parks is the Disneyland fire engine. As a bit of a vehicle enthusiast, Gurr came up with an idea for the Disneyland park that Walt hadn’t quite thought of. So, under the understanding that everything about Disneyland was typically Walt’s idea, Bob  simply mentioned one day to Walt that Disneyland had a fire station, but no fire engine. That simple statement put the thought in Walt’s mind and a short time later Gurr found himself driving a scaled down fire engine down the I-5 freeway to Disneyland!
That fire engine became a staple for the Disneyland park, but Bob Gurr still proudly states that the engine was his only attraction in the park. It was his idea through and through, but Walt made it a reality! He is one of very few Imagineers that can say that even today, long after Walt’s unfortunate passing. Walt loved an “attraction” that was Gurr’s idea so much that he even rode the engine around the park many early mornings just to take in the views and tour the park he dreamed about for many years.
(photo: Disney
However, the story doesn’t end there. According to Disney the final official photo of Walt Disney ever taken in the Disneyland Park was of the man himself and his most famous character, Mickey Mouse, sitting on that very same fire engine!
As always, be sure to SHARE this post with friends. This great story of a Disney Legend is one that has always been a favorite of mine for so many reasons. Hopefully you enjoyed it! Thanks for reading!
