The "Lost" Epcot Pavilion That Could Have Changed The In-Park Experience Altogether!

by: guide4wdw – Collin

Epcot very well could be one of the most redeveloped parks in the history of Disney entertainment. Throughout it’s lengthy history the concept itself evolved from a working community of tomorrow into a theme park for guests to enjoy and learn from in a variety of different ways. Of course, all the parks have changed and developed over time, but one particular element of Epcot could have very well changed the look and feel of the entire park.

In the early years of Epcot Center, plans were set that detailed a developing series of pavilions which would be added to the current lineup of opening day offerings in 1982. One year later, a new pavilion was set to debut and even had immense concept art, renderings, videos, and much more already pre-recorded for it’s development  Sadly, the concept, which many guests would love to see today, was abandoned.

For those of you intrigued by the details of theses “forgotten” projects (like me), the pavilion was set to focus on the equatorial region of Africa. Of course, the design was full of Disney magic and went much farther into development than many truly recognize. In 1982, Disney had already developed plans for two attractions, one feature experience, and an entire layout for the proposed area.

The pavilion itself was set to be built around a centerpiece that functioned as an observation deck and grand “treehouse” style structure for guests to explore first hand. The building would look out over a artificially developed but highly realistic watering hole featuring the tell tale elements of nighttime in Africa. To create such an effect, Disney had done immense research in recording a film that would project on a large, dome-shaped, screen functioning as a backdrop for the experience. Of course, the screen would use the rear projections which Disney was utilizing in many of their current attractions to hide the projection components. Framing the area would have been an elaborate group of fauna to really set the scene and develop that immersive experience Disney is known for. When the concept was completed, it would have included an element of artificial heat, smell, and even artificial winds.

Beyond that “centerpiece,” the area had two new attractions already in the works. One, called, “The Heartbeat of Africa” and another called, “Africa Rediscovered.” “The Heartbeat of Africa” is the one that seems to have been much further along in production. The film based attraction (with surprises along the way) itself was designed to give a closer look at Africa’s history in a way that was intriguing to guests and told by a traditional African storyteller. However, the pre-show is what many have wondered about for years. To set the stage for the rich environment of the show, this guest area was supposed to feature animatronic drums that played and entertained guests in a similar way to what you may find at the pre-show for Stitch’s Great Escape, or even the iconic Enchanted Tiki Room.

The other attraction, “Africa Rediscovery,” was really based around the concept of changing guests opinions of modern Africa (at that time). While also a film, the display focused on the positive elements of Africa and attempted to share a cultural and geographical view of the continent overall. Unfortunately, while we will never know how successful it may have been, it’s interesting to recognize Disney’s efforts to change the stigma of Africa being this scary and dangerous place.

We may never see this pavilion really developed, especially after all of these years have gone by, but we do have a small outpost area where the expansion was set to debut. It’s a far cry from the original design, but as I always say, no good idea ever gets left behind in Imagineering. With changes are vaguely announced and coming to Epcot in the not so distant future, there is a slight chance we may see a new pavilion along the way. Of course, considering this pavilion was likely scrapped intentionally as a result of Animal Kingdom, we will likely never see an “Africa” at Epcot. Of course, Joe Rohde’s development of Africa in Animal Kingdom is certainly impressive!

Interestingly though, a comment by Disney suggested that they will be keeping Epcot true to it’s roots as changes are being made. It will be neat to see what Disney does with the park. Without a doubt, changes are coming, but is there any chance these changes could involve a new pavilion, or perhaps one of the promised expansions to add Spain or Israel to the showcase? It’s certainly not likely, but definitely something to think about! Imagine how things would look today if this massive pavilion was ever fully developed!

New Summer Extra Magic Hours Have Been Added to Animal Kingdom’s Schedule

New Summer Extra Magic Hours Have Been Added to Animal Kingdom’s Schedule
by: guide4wdw – Collin

We have some good news for those of you visiting the parks this summer. Animal Kingdom will be offering even more summer, late night, extra magic hours. With a recent change to the Animal Kingdom operating hours schedule it appears as if every night for a majority of the summer will get at least 2 extra hours of operation as a part of Disney’s Extra magic hours for resort guests.

From now though July 4th, the park will be open extra hours from 11:00pm-1:00am. After that date, hours shift slightly and the park will still remain open 2 extra hours, but from 10:00pm-12:00am. These additional extra magic hours appear to end August 20th.

Disney has yet to say what will remain open for these extra magic hours, but many assume that it could only be Pandora. Personally, I’d love to see DinoLand operational at night more frequently. The area brings forth a whole different experience as the sun goes down. The lights are unique to see in the night hours and the whole park really takes on a different feel altogether.

While we don’t know the attraction lineup for the extra hours, it’s great to see Animal Kingdom open later hours. I expect that very few attractions will remain open late, but the park is a great place to just wander and take in an entirely different atmosphere than nighttime in any other Disney park.

Are you visiting Pandora this summer? We’ll be there in just two short weeks!

Adventure Is Out There! – A Disney Wedding Like You’ve Never Seen Before

Adventure Is Out There! – A Disney Wedding Like You’ve Never Seen Before
by: guide4wdw – Caitlin

All weddings are beautiful, but with a touch of Disney, your special day can be downright magical. I had the privilege of attending the wedding of one of my sweet friends who created a picturesque scene inspired by the delightful Carl and Ellie. Catherine and Zak are Disney lovers at heart and would’ve made PIXAR proud with their homage to the beloved film. From the “Up” soundtrack to a fireplace filled with balloons, take a look at the beginning of the Ransom’s greatest adventure.

The story begins with Zak’s incredibly adorable proposal. He created a scrapbook of all of their memories together, and on the last page were the words, “Marry me?” The occasion was completed with a bouquet of balloons fit to give Carl and Ellie’s house a lift to Paradise Falls. Major props for creativity, Zak. We are highly impressed.

Fast forward to the big day. Catherine and Zak took great care to ensure their wedding celebration was full of details from their favorite film. When entering the ceremony space, you were greeted with a small scale version of Carl and Ellie’s home, complete with balloons. Friends and family of the couple were encouraged to sign a balloon on a beautiful canvas inspired by “Up.” The soundtrack of the movie was played as guests arrived – a sweet addition to the whimsical atmosphere.

Before Mrs. Ransom could walk down the aisle, she needed a few Disney touches of her own. Catherine’s beautiful gown was hung on a Mickey hanger adorned with her new name and wedding date. In true dedication to the film, she also pinned to her dress, “Our Greatest Adventure.”

Catherine and Zak’s reception was where their “Up” theme truly came to life. The space was centered around a scene straight from the film. On the stage sat two vintage chairs and a fireplace filled to the brim with – you guessed it – balloons! Also on display was a confetti cake topped with Carl and Ellie themselves.

As you explored the reception venue, Disney touches were found throughout the area. The centerpieces featured larger than life balloons with beautiful ribbons cascading down to the table. Table numbers were found on large jars equivalent to those Carl and Ellie used to collect money for Paradise Falls. Extra points for creativity, friends!

The beautiful couple danced the night away at their Disney dream wedding. I think Carl and Ellie would be proud! We wish you the very best, Catherine and Zak! Here’s to happily ever after.

Monorail Blue Is Currently Having Problems – May Evacuate

Monorail Blue Is Currently Having Problems – May Evacuate

by: guide4wdw – Collin

An interesting event is currently occurring near Walt Disney World’s Transportation and Ticket Center. Monorail Blue is reportedly stopped and according to twitter may soon be evacuated. One particular report states that a piece of the monorail may have fallen off near Epcot and could very well be related to the incident. As far as we know, no one was hurt as a part of the issue, the monorail has simply broken down.

(photo: flickr)

Right now, the cause has not been released and the rumor concerning the piece of the monorail falling off may or may not be the cause of the monorails malfunction.
The Fire department and EMS are on the scene. Reedy Creek does indeed have a contraption developed to safely clear the monorail in these situations. It is not yet known if that will be required or if it will be able to make it to the station.
If more info arrises, we’ll try to update this story here or over on twitter. Again, it looks as if the monorail has just developed problems and everyone should be perfectly fine. Here’s a closer look from many reports popping up on twitter.

Update: The monorail has reached the station and will be emptied as usual. It did apparently have assistance getting there according to twitter reports.

"Departed Disney" – Taking Flight With "If You Had Wings"

by: guide4wdw – Collin

As we continue our constantly developing “Departed Disney” series, today we’re taking flight  and looking back at the “If You Had Wings” attraction. While taking flight really wasn’t the main part of the attraction, it did focus on many of the places you could fly to and experience  with a commercial airline.
The attraction officially debuted in summer of 1972, and was received by many as an interesting concept. The ride itself was a simple take on the Omnimover ride vehicle which later became better known for it’s use in attractions like Horizons at Epcot. Unfortunately, however, “If You Had Wings” never grew to be immensely popular and as result was often changed and redeveloped over time.
At first, the attraction was a journey to different destinations and a cultural ride through quite similar to what you would find in a screen-based attraction like the original Gran Fiesta Tour. Guests boarded a small vehicle and traveled through various rooms featuring many of the destinations Eastern Airlines traveled to at the time. Conveniently, Eastern airlines was the original sponsor of the attraction as well.
Perhaps the most exciting portion of the ride through was a section that slightly simulated a short “flight.” The ride vehicles adjusted to an angle, the screen surrounded the riders, wind blew gently, and developed an early simulator experience. While it was certainly rudimentary by today’s standards it was an interesting concept at the time.
Believe it our not, at one point you could even view “If You Had Wings” from the Tomorrowland Transit Authority PeopleMover, similar to what you can do today with a portion of Buzz Lightyear’s Space Ranger Spin.
However, what many guests remember the most was the iconic theme song. Performed by Buddy Baker, guests truly enjoyed the simple repetition of “If You Had Wings!” Years later, the attraction closed as Eastern Airlines gave up their sponsorship as the company faced financial concerns. Just a short time later, the entire airline went out of business. Sadly, a piece of the attraction left with the sponsorship change that would really alter the on-ride experience. Just a short time after the attractions closure (just 5 days), it reopened under a new name, “If You Could Fly.”
When the new concept debuted, all references to Eastern Airlines had faded away and a new soundtrack replaced the old one that guests had grown to love over the years. After that shift, the attraction lost the momentum it had gained with guests under the Eastern Airlines affiliation. Just 2 years after the shift to an unbranded experience (1989), the attraction closed for quite a few months and was redeveloped into Delta Dreamflight with an entirely new ride concept.
In the early days, “If You Had Wings” was a small piece of the magic that didn’t require a ticket to ride. For those of you who may not know, when Disney World first began, attractions were ticketed on an A through E basis with a ticket book guests could purchase in order to board the rides. This particular experience was completely free of charge so many guests rode it time after time and really grew to love the journey through multiple destinations. Today, the attraction holds a special place in the memories of many Disney parks visitors who had the opportunity to experience it first hand. Things have certainly changed in Tomorrowland over the years, but today we have Buzz Lightyear’s Space Ranger Spin to fill the void left by this iconic experience.

7 Common Rookie Mistakes You Should Avoid At Walt Disney World

7 Common Rookie Mistakes You Should Avoid At Walt Disney World
by: guide4wdw – Caitlin

Planning a trip to Disney can be overwhelming, especially if you’ve never experienced the Disney parks before. I’m here to share some choices you should definitely avoid in order to make the best of your Disney Vacation. From bottled water decisions to navigating long wait times, take a look at some classic, rookie moves.

1. Over packing
Most people go to the Disney parks with the philosophy of needing to take everything they own. While I am completely an advocate for being prepared at the parks, you may not need that extra set of sunglasses, 3 flashlights, and a protractor for the Magic Kingdom. Of course, I’m exaggerating. But, be sure to take only items you will truly use during your time in the park. Trust me, those bags get heavy in a hurry (and oh so hot if you’re arriving any time between now and September)!

2. Bottled Water (Don’t Buy It!)
Buying water at Disney is a huge waste of money. When in the Disney parks, you can go up to any counter service location that serves fountain drinks and receive FREE ice water. If you just can’t bear the Florida tap water taste, pack a few drink flavoring mixes in your park bag. Plus, this will stay much colder than a water bottle. On a related note, do not, do not, do not be those people with horribly heavy refillable water bottles shoved in your backpack. You can thank me later.

3. Lugging Around Purchases
So you and Grandma got a little carried away in Mouse Gear? We’ve all been there! Do not lug your new Disney tees, spinning tea cup coffee mug, and giant Stitch plush from Mexico to Morocco! Disney offers a service that allows you to pick up purchases at the front of the park as you exit for the day. If you’re staying on property, they can even be sent directly to your resort! This takes away the heavy bags and also eliminates the risk of breaking your new treasures!

4. Walking the Entire Park
Disney World is a very, very big place. When walking around the famous parks, your toes will get tired in a hurry. Be sure to utilize the in-park transportation available at both Magic Kingdom and Epcot. At Magic Kingdom, you can take a ride on the railroad and enjoy a relaxing trip to the front of the park, Frontierland, and Storybook Circus. In EPCOT, water transportation is available via Friendship Boats from two areas within the World Showcase.

5. Wearing Flip Flops
This mistake goes right along with the one above. Do not, under any circumstances, wear flip flops to a Disney park. If you’re concerned about fashion (and I always am), opt for Toms or sandals with arch support. It is not uncommon to walk upwards of 10 miles in a typical Disney day.

6. Finding Your Fireworks Spot Last Minute
While this is tempting, do not wait until 8:55 to find your spot to watch “Happily Ever After.” Not only will you make some major enemies as you squeeze your way onto Main Street, but you will most likely not be able to see and/or take quality pictures. We suggest scoping out your spot about 30 minutes ahead of the fireworks show. Pay close attention to areas that are taped off as acceptable viewing spots.

7. Showing Up at 10:00 AM
This may be my biggest warning to ensure a magical day in the Kingdom. It is extremely important to check your park hours and arrive as close to the rope drop as possible. Early mornings are the very best bet to ensure you are able to visit all of your must-do attractions. Please, do not come to Magic Kingdom 2-3 hours after opening and expect to see short wait times. This simply does not happen anymore. WDW has reached quite a peak in popularity and have consistently busy days almost all year round.

There you have it, a list of the biggest Disney mistakes. Don’t be a rookie! Promise me you won’t buy any water bottles or wear flip flops to Animal Kingdom.

The Trailer For Olaf’s Frozen Adventure Has Officially Debuted

The Trailer For Olaf’s Frozen Adventure Has Officially Debuted

by: guide4wdw – Collin

Just this morning, as a part of the Good Morning America program, Disney released a closer look at the upcoming short film, “Olaf’s Frozen Adventure.” The “film” which will take place before Pixar’s next big production, “Coco,” is designed to tell the story of Olaf finding a holiday tradition.

The short film is set to last just over 20 minutes, which I believe could be the longest short film ever developed to debut before a Pixar film. “Coco” is set to debut November 22nd paired with “Olaf’s Frozen Adventure.” As the holidays draw closer, this appears to be a great way to add a little bit of Christmas flair to the accompanying movie based on family traditions as well.

While many have shared mixed reviews of the “Frozen” concept, many kids and adults will really enjoy this addition to what already looks like a quite interesting concept for the main Pixar production.

If you haven’t seen the trailer already on TV, here’s a closer look:

So, what do you think? Are you looking forward to this new short film? If so, please SHARE it with friends! Thanks!

Disney Patent Filed for Occupant Sensing Robotic Controls

Disney Patent Filed for Occupant Sensing Robotic Controls

by: guide4wdw – Collin

In a not so surprising move, Disney has filed a new patent once again. Just recently, rumblings arrived across the internet about what is being termed a “System for controlling robotic characters to enhance photographic results.” Within the overall concept, this patent is designed for theme park use and essentially senses the occupant movements within a ride vehicle or other situation and responds accordingly to provide a better image capture for guests.

Overall, the concept is quite interesting, but I do believe there may be more to this concept than meets the eye. According to the idea, this patent filing will allow animatronics to sense what guests are doing and alter their behavior accordingly. Personally I think this idea combined with other fairly recent patents (which are supposed to track guest eye movement and emotional responses: Disney Patent Filing Describes “Emotion Sensing” Technology and Disney Awarded Patent for Tracking Guest Visual Movementspoint to an interesting conclusion. These concepts appear as if Disney may be gearing up for a new and highly immersive guest experience in the not so distant future.

Of course, my thoughts are simply speculation, but I could easily see these concepts being combined to develop an insanely immersive environment for the new experiences which have been “teased” for Star Wars Land. Also, these could be a part of a much larger project or simply something they’re developing that may never be put into practice. At this point everything is simply speculation with the exception of the patent filing itself. Disney will likely never fully explain the use of this patent if it arrives in the parks and as usual, the mystery and magic behind the attractions will be strictly reserved for Imagineering’s understanding and simply our on-ride enjoyment.

Either way, this is a fairly interesting combination of ideas that really could transform the guest experience altogether. Who would have thought any of this would have been possible today 15-20 years ago! It’s amazing how far technology has come and as with anything Imagineering does, I’m sure they’re working on something that will blow our minds in the future. Thanks for reading and have a great rest of the day!

The Interesting Backstory of The Three Caballeros Animatronics

The Interesting Backstory of The Three Caballeros Animatronics

by: guide4wdw – Collin

(photo: flickr)

In most of our articles regarding Disney history, many of the things we tend to share are elements of the Disney experience that will never or can never really return to the parks. Today, however, we have a unique story of traveling animatronics that have recently returned to Walt Disney World, the Three Caballeros.

As many of you may have noticed, the Gran Fiesta Tour at Epcot’s Mexico pavilion recently received a brief change that has brought a nostalgic element of the parks back for guest enjoyment. Animatronics prominently featuring each of the Three Caballeros are displayed during the final scene of the ride, but what many do not recognize is that these unique creations have an interesting history of their own.

In the early days of Magic Kingdom, there was a show called the Mickey Mouse Revue. The production featured animatronic characters performing as Mickey’s grand orchestra. Of course, today we have a slightly similar iteration of that same concept with Mickey’s Philharmagic Orchestra. However, rather than an on-screen production, a majority of the action took place through live, animatronic, figures. As the show progressed, over 20 characters rose to the stage and debuted a song of their own or one combined with others in the group.

The Three Caballeros performed their iconic medley in a fury of lights and sounds as shots from Panchito’s pistol rang throughout the room. The characters jumped from location to location in a way that only Disney Imagineering and creative lighting could really develop!

Unfortunately, after 9 years of service to the park, the attraction was retired and removed from Walt Disney World completely in September of 1980. A few short years later, in April of 1983, the attraction “re-opened” in it’s new location at Tokyo Disneyland. While it wasn’t quite the same, The Three Caballeros made the journey and spent over 20 years as a part of that show until it closed in 2009. The animatronics have officially resurfaced in Florida over at Epcot as a small piece of the boat ride the pavilion has become known for. Their arrival debuted rather unannounced as Disney installed the characters quickly and quietly quite some time ago. For the nostalgic Disney fan, it was a homecoming and a small piece of an attraction that many had grown to love.

Thousands of guests ride the attraction each and every day, but very few know this extensive backstory of the animatronics. Next time you’re in the parks, take a few minutes to ride the attraction and appreciate that Disney history hiding in plain site! Until next time, thanks for reading and please share this article with friends!

5 Quick and Easy Ways to Use Left Over Dining Plan Snack Credits – Plus a BONUS!

5 Quick and Easy Ways to Use Left Over Dining Plan Snack Credits

by: guide4wdw – Collin

For those of you who have used the dining plan in the past, you’re likely well aware of the struggle to use a bunch of leftover snack credits at the end of your stay. Typically, by the time you eat your two other meals for the day (at least on the typical counter service, snack, and table service plan) you don’t always need that third food item. For many, as the week progresses, the snacks tend to pile up. Then, on that last night before you head home, you realize you have to utilize 5-10 snack credits across your family’s plan and don’t want to waste the “free” food. Today, we’ve come up with a few solutions to that ever present problem. While these may not be the ideal use of snack credits, when you’re in a  pinch and need something that will travel well, these are our go-to choices. (photo: wikipedia)
1. Mickey Rice Krispy Treats
-There are very few things more classically Disney than a Mickey-shaped treat. In regards to this particular variation, despite what you may think, they travel quite well and last much longer than you would expect. In the past, we’ve brought these tasty treats home to friends and family. Of course, they do take up a little room in your suitcase, but also allow you to bring a piece of the magic back home to enjoy as the post-Disney withdrawals begin to set in. It’s amazing how something as a simple as a treat from the parks can take you back to the memories of your most recent vacation. You can find this offering at basically any bakery-style store and many of the resort gift shops.

2. Disney Mints
-Using snack credits for mints is something we would never suggest you do while touring the parks, because there are so many better ways to utilize a snack offering. But, when you’re taking something home, these are a great option. First, they travel extremely well. The containers are metal and very hard to crush as you travel through airports or pack things tightly into a vehicle. Second, they last for about as long as you would want them to. When was the last time you had a package of mints go “out of date?” Even a few months after our last week-long trip, I still have a pack of the mints in my vehicle. It’s a weird selection, but it’s much better than losing a snack credit completely. Any location that typically has a checkout counter will have these mints nearby.

3. PEZ Dispensers
-After discovering this the last time we used the dining plan, it’s become a bit of a new tradition. Believe it or not, PEZ dispensers can be used as a snack credit as well. Again, I would only recommend this if you have left over credits, but they’re a fun little item that you can bring back home and keep for years to come. Personally, I’ve started a small collection of classic Disney character PEZ and have never really “paid” for any of them with anything except leftover snack credits. They’re honestly not the best snack in the world, but they are something that travels extremely well and nearly everyone can appreciate. You can find these at any bakery style store and many of the resort gift shops as well.

4. Chip and Dale Snack Company Offerings
-If you’re not short on space while traveling, grab a few of these Chip and Dale Snack company pre-packaged offerings. Surprisingly, they’re actually quite tasty and incredibly easy to share. Unfortunately, they do take up quite a bit of space in your luggage, but in the case of their trail mix, pretzels, and other offerings, they won’t typically melt in the heat as you travel home. The snacks are also shelf stable and sold in resealable packages at nearly all of the resort gift shop locations as well as the parks.

5. Goofy’s Candy Company Treats
-This last choice is one of our favorites for those of you who like to snack on your way home or only have a couple snack credits left to use. On the last night of your vacation, head over to Disney Springs and walk to Goofy’s Candy Company right beside the giant Rainforest Cafe volcano. In the back of the store, you’ll find an area of freshly made treats that many of which cannot be found other places on property. Unfortunately, not everything offered is on the dining plan, but a majority of it is. All of the creations are incredibly tasty, and as long as you plan on eating it within the next few days (if you can wait that long), it will last very well.

(Photo: flickr)

BONUS: Epcot Pavilions
-We couldn’t limit our list to just these offerings, so we’re adding one more! If by chance you end your week (or day or however long you plan on staying in Epcot), a great option for snack credits are the bakeries throughout many of the pavilions. Over in Germany you can pick up freshly made caramel corn (which is outstanding), in France you can find a variety of easy baked treats, and even in Norway you can find a few fun bakery offerings. While not all of these travel well (and as a result didn’t make our list), the popcorn will actually stay good for quite some time if you can get it to a refrigerator within few days. For some reason, keeping it refrigerated maintains that crisp of the popcorn without it turning into a squishy mixture that nobody wants to eat.

So, that’s our list! If we missed something, be sure to tells us what you’d add down below or leave us a comment on your favorite social media platform! Of course, these are only a few of the many items you can use snack credits for, and many of these “travel friendly” items we would never recommend as a normal snack credit. But, if you’re traveling, they’re way better options than losing the credits you payed for anyway.

If you or a friend you know will be traveling to the parks, help us grow the site by SHARING this post with anyone going to WDW soon! Thanks!
